Are you training enough?
Are you training enough?
The first question we need to answer to determine if you are training enough is, What are you training for? Are you training for health, rank, competition, self-defense or to become the best martial artist you can be?
Let’s look at our time spent in class. 6:30 to 8:00 two nights a week, that’s 3 hours per week. Now out of that we subtract 5 to 10 minutes of socializing, 5 to 10 minutes for announcements, 10 to 20 minutes for devotionals, lessons, history, etc.
Now we are down to about 2 hours per week of actual physical training which of course we divide up into Kata, Kumite, Grappling, Jujitsu, and Street Self-Defense.
Are you getting my point? Name one thing that you have excelled at by committing less than an hour per week towards?
Going back to our first question of what are we training for …
Health? Yes, 2 hours per week will be a benefit depending on the intensity of your workout but a minimal benefit.
Rank? I hate to even include this but alas there are always a few who are all about the belt. Let me just echo what Grandmaster Mills has stated many times … rank without knowledge and ability is worthless.
Competition? No way!! Even though I’m not a big supporter of our current tournament curcuit I can tell you it takes total commitment to excel in this arena.
Self-Defense? This is the one that always scares me? Let me put it this way … How much time is you life worth?
The Best Martial Artist You Can Be?
When it all boils down class is primarily for two things,
1. Adding to your knowledge
2. Testing your ability
That’s what we do as instructors, we lead you down the path a step at a time and test you along the way.
It’s up to you to perfect that knowledge and be prepared for those tests.
Do your homework!
